Tengwang Pavilion is located on the east bank of the Gan River along Yanjiang Road in the northwest of Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. It was first built in the fourth year of the Yonghui era of the Tang Dynasty (653 AD) and served as a royal entertainment pavilion in ancient China. It is the only surviving royal architectural structure in the region south of the Yangtze River from ancient times. The pavilion was constructed by Li Yuanying, the "Prince of Teng" and younger brother of Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, during his tenure as the military governor of Hongzhou in the Jiangnan region. It gained enduring fame through the lines "The sunset glow flies together with a solitary duck, the autumn water shares the same color with the vast sky" from the "Preface to Tengwang Pavilion" by the early Tang poet Wang Bo. These verses made it one of the earliest among the "Three Great Towers of Jiangnan" to achieve nationwide renown, earning it the title of the foremost of the "Three Great Towers of Jiangnan."
In 2021, as part of the upgrade from a 4A to a 5A scenic area and the expansion of landscape lighting, the Nanchang municipal government undertook another lighting renovation for Tengwang Pavilion. The project is situated to the south of the main scenic area of Tengwang Pavilion in Donghu District, Nanchang. It extends east to Xinzhou Road, south to Zhongshan West Road, west to the Gan River Scenic Belt, and north to the tourist service center on the southern side of the main scenic area of Tengwang Pavilion.
