The first China International Import Expo (CIIE) opened in Shanghai on November 5, 2018, for a week-long run. It was the world's grandest import-themed expo. The business exhibition area covered 270,000 square meters, attracting participation from 172 countries, regions, and international organizations. Over 3,600 companies exhibited, and more than 400,000 domestic and international buyers attended for negotiations. This event represented a concrete action by China to promote the global economy and support economic globalization.

The nighttime lighting renovation for this Shanghai CIIE, focusing on both banks of the Huangpu River—Pudong's Lujiazui and Puxi's the Bund—centered on the core theme "Gathering Colors into a Rainbow, Building Bridges with Dreams." Based primarily on the original software, the StrongLED lighting system involved independently developing master control software for analog signal output. The software was reprogrammed and adjusted, followed by an official modification of the software originally installed in the project. This assisted the municipal lighting management office in gaining control over the overall show programming. New software protocols were applied to broadcast lighting effects at the Oriental Pearl Tower, the White Magnolia Plaza (Sinar Mas Center), and the Foxconn Building.
